One of the more enjoyable Newberry winning books but still quite forgettable. This is a re-read and I really didn't remember the majority of it. The poetry flows well (and it was refreshing to read something different in that sense).
Billie Jo is fourteen living during the depression and the dust bowl. Her family is trying to survive on the farm but with no rain it makes near impossible. When the most devastating tragedy happens Billie Jo and her father struggle even more.
A rather depressing children's book (which I'm finding to be a theme in these Newberrys) but the story of living through the Depression gives a great oversight of the time period for elementary children.
