Stargirl Book Review

Stargirl - Jerry Spinelli

"She was elusive. She was today. She was tomorrow."

I've been hearing about Stargirl for years. Several people have raved about it. And for some reason I'm just getting around to reading it. Boy, I'm glad I did. A book that actually lives up to its hype.

Leo lives in a normal high school filled with the cliche groups. Then appears Stargirl. A strange girl that plays the ukelele, wears strange clothes and doesn't fit in with anything. For some reason she doesn't seem to care and Leo is enhanced by her.

Stargirl is based strongly around a theme. That its okay to be different. That you don't have to fit in with everyone else in high school or in life. Be yourself. My one complaint would be that throughout the book there were times when I felt like it was being shoved in my face and I had to roll my eyes at it.

But Stargirl and her uniqueness just made me smile more than frustrate me. The ending thoroughly makes up for anything its lacking. In fact, this is one of those books that needs to be read in high school classes. A short, sweet, but powerful story.

Audiobook: Only four discs, taking me barely a week this audiobook was short and sweet. The reader did a nice job doing the different intonations and was able to put the emotion through the theme of the book.
