Cuckoo Song Book Review

Cuckoo Song - Frances Hardinge

While Cuckoo Song is certainly well written and provocative story, I ended up being bored throughout most of it. It took me longer to read than most books and I almost didn't finish it several times. Though, looking at the average 4.0 star rating on Goodreads, it would seem as if I'm of the minority here.

Triss wakes up from an accident she can't remember. Her sister, Penn hates her. Her brother Sebastian, seemingly dead from the war may actually be alive. And everything around her is acting strange, from her dolls to hating scissors to feeling anything but normal. Triss knows there's something wrong. She's going to find out but she doesn't even know who she can trust.

By far one of the weirdest young adult books I've read. I think that's what turned me off of this book. Too weird. I didn't care much or relate at all to the characters though I did like the blooming relationship between the two sisters. And I appreciate the fact the the parents played a role in the plot, which is often a thing lacking in young adult.

So, some may really enjoy this creepy fantasy. It just, unfortunately, is not my type of thing.
