I am in such a juvenile children's book mood this month. And, Awkward just keeps it going. I loved everything about this. The drawings are wonderful, the characters are quirky and the story gives a really good message.
Penelope starts out her first day at middle school on a bad step. She's made fun of and makes fun of the zero no-body boy, Jamie. But then she's introduced to art club. Whose arch nemesis are the science club. After a series events the two have to compete for the fair club table. Can the art club win the spot? Will Penelope ever be able to apologize to Jamie and be friends with him?
The overall theme of friendship and teamwork is excellent in this graphic novel. I'd recommend this to any child and family. It's so relatable. From being bullied, to being in clubs, to starting a new school, a character with parents who fight and so much more. The author really does manage to pack a lot of themes throughout this graphic novel and I LOVED it.
