I grew up watching the movie many times but never actually read the book. I'm definitely glad I did! It is a great audio book too. I already put the BFG on hold at the library as I want to re-read it as well as Dahl's other books.
Matilda lives with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wormwood and her older brother. She isn't like them at all. Matilda loves to read from an early age. She's the brightest person you'll ever meet. But her parents don't like it at all. Then she's sent to school and meets her teacher, someone who finally believes Matilda isn't a spoiled brat but a magically gifted child.
Matilda is a great character. I think, though there aren't any persons quite as bright as her, she's relatable. The side characters are just as fantastic and memorable.
The movie very much did this book justice. Its very nearly word for word. And I like it just as much as the book if not more.
