The Scorpio Races

The Scorpio Races - Maggie Stiefvater I have a lot of mixed feelings about this book. Though I enjoyed it much more than Maggie Stiefvater's Shiver series (which I honestly did not even finish - unusual for me). There are great characters in this book. But, that's the issue I had, its only really about the characters whereas I wanted it to be more about the Scorpio Races.

Scorpio Races-racing dangerous horses on the island of Thisby. Puck "Kate" Connolly is the first girl to ever do so. And the only reason she's doing it is so her older brother, Gabe, will stay on Thisby with her and her younger brother, Finn. Orphaned at a young age they need the money to save their parents house.

Sean Kendrick, a multi time winner of the Scorpio Races who is running in the race because it's what he does. I really had trouble listening to Sean's side of the story. It felt underdeveloped compared to Puck, who I thoroughly enjoyed

That's the other thing, I really tend to dislike books that switch views nearly every other chapter, causing it to drag having so much detail on the characters. I would have much rather just listen to Puck's story the entire time.

The races. We hear about them from the beginning, we hear about the training, we hear about the island's view on them, etc. etc. But they barely happen in the book, maybe the last ten pages or so (I listened on audio). And that's what really disappointed me.

I wanted action, I wanted races, I wanted....more. Where exactly is this island, what time period are we in, what were the races like before, and mostly lengthen the actual time we got to read about the races.

Though, a harsh review, I did still enjoy this book, it's creative, and very easy to picture the characters and places. Do you like long drawn out characterized books? You'll probably really enjoy this one!
