Beauty Queens

Beauty Queens - Libba Bray Ugh. This book is a big no for me. A Satire following Miss Teen Dream pageant girls crashing on a remote island finding their own way to survive.

There are some good things about the book, I suppose. But it would have been so much better if I didn't roll my eyes or sigh in frustration at 90% of the lines most of the girls said. Yes, yes I suppose we're supposed to be angry at how they think and laugh at it. But, it got old. And fast, for me.

Helpful footnotes, 40 plus of them became obnoxious and downright unnecessary after the tenth one. And the commercial breaks. Again, I enjoyed the first two or so but after that....

I'm all for women's rights and some good girl power. This book just didn't do it for me. It would have been better if the girls weren't stunningly gorgeous. It seemed very hypocritical to me, when preaching differences and "be happy of who you are" when you're reading about the prettiest girls of the United States. Another thing that really bothered me was how quickly they, even in a book about woman powers and individuality, managed to fall in love with boys they just met. Ugh. Frustrating.

That pretty much describes this book for me. Frustration and very disappointed. I loved Diviners and will most likely enjoy Bray's other works. Her form of Satire just didn't do it for me.
