The Bookstore

The Bookstore - Deborah Meyler

Honestly, I'm not finishing this book. I've made it about 100 pages and there really isn't a single thing that I'm enjoying about it. Maybe if I was expecting a book about someone who is in a manipulative relationship while trying to be pregnant.

The title is very misleading. I really expected someone who loves books, is happy going and works with a bunch of quirky characters. Instead we get Esme, somewhat full of her self, trying to decide whether to keep a baby, still listens to Mitchell (the father) who is a manipulative son of a bitch) and just happens to get a job at the local bookstore.

The few scenes in the bookstore are rather enjoyable. But, the lack of quality in writing lessens the strength of them. Short and choppy sentences that feels like 9th grade high school student's wrote them, such as:

"When I get to the diner, on 3rd and 28th, he is already there. It's one of the many things I like about him; he's never late. I see him through the window as I get there, and I stop for a second just to look at him. It's a curious thing, t feel so glad that someone else in the world, to feel that it is almost a privilege to love them."

On its own it seems just fine. But the entire book is written this way. Simple sentence structure with little to know feeling or description making the characters and settings bland.

I hate to be harsh on books since I know writers put work into them to get them published. But I really can't find it in me to give a decent rating or review. Some may enjoy this but its not something I would recommend you read.
