This book rather reminds me of the Harry Potter series. William is a strong, kindhearted fourteen year old off to save the abbey from an evil king.
The year is 1347, and young, 14 year old William is a monks apprentice at the Crowfield abbey. When sent out into the woods William finds a hobgoblin and mysteries and secrets of Crowfield are risen. There's an evil king lurking, a dead angel...Crowfield isn't the safe haven for Will anymore.
There are fairies, mystery, magic, medieval history, angels and adventure. Its truly a book littered with every genre you can think of. Therein its strength.
The problem I have with it, is that its almost too detailed for a middle grade book, unless they're really interested in the medieval time period. Pat Walsh certainly does an excellent job in describing the setting and does not shy away from medieval facts and the time period and its not badly written. Its something I definitely have to keep in mind for a certain type of reader. It's details might scare away the average middle grade reader.
But, as an adult reader, I loved it..the setting, the story, the characters.
