The Enemy Book Review

The Enemy (The Enemy #1) - Charlie Higson

Before I get into a big review on this book, I will honestly state that I'm easily comparing this to the Rot and Ruin series, which was the first and only other zombie apocalypse story I've read. I should also state that R and R is probably my favorite young adult series out there right now. Because Jonathan Maberry is kick ass and can even make us care about zombies (they're people too). So going into The Enemy, knowing it was a zombie story, I had high hopes and was hoping it would be as good as R and R. Unfortunately, I was rather disappointed.

People over the age of 16 were getting sick, really sick. Then one day they changed into animalistic creatures showing less than human characteristic - zombies. A group of kids have barricaded themselves into a large store.

These group of kids consist of small Sam, Deke and Freak, Arron, Jester, Blue, Maxie, and others. Some are forced to lead, others find themselves in predicaments finding them alone with zombie (or as they call them grownups). When an outsider, a young kid, comes into their safe haven telling them that the palace in London is still safe the group must make a decision on whether or not to risk travel across London with grownups crawling all over the place.

It's certainly an interesting take on the whole zombie thing. The bizarre names were a little much for me. Especially since every single one of them had one. The writing is very, very simplistic. So much so that I really think I would have enjoyed this when I was younger. Definitely a great book to recommend to middle school/high school boys. They eat this zombie stuff up!
