Landline is a book I was highly anticipating to read this year. I loved Attachments, Fangirl, and Eleanor and Park. Fangirl made me fall in love with Rainbow Rowell and read everything else she had out there. So naturally, I was so ready for a new one. Unfortunately, this is very obviously my least favorite Rowell book. I couldn't get into the story or the characters.
Georgie has known her marriage was falling apart for some time now. Neal, her college sweetheart heads off to his mothers in Omaha without her. Instead of spending Christmas with her husband and two kids she stays home to write her dream TV show with her long lifetime friend, Seth. Things quickly fall apart for Georgie and reality and the past merge together. Its up to her to make the right decision to fix her marriage with Neal so they can finally be happy.
Georgie McCool was a bland character for me. A TV show comic writer - too busy working to be home with her family. Neal the typical stay at home Dad - high strung and focused on his family. And then Seth, the best friend always getting in the way for Neal. I suppose we were supposed to be rooting for Neal and Georgie but for some reason I just didn't care enough about either characters to even really bother. 90% of the time I was bored. Part of it was the audio book, part of it was the characters, part of it the storyline.
I was hoping the ending would surprise me and make up for the rest of the story but I was left feeling like I didn't get enough. Though, its certainly not a book I hated its just not the type of book I was looking forward to reading by Ms. Rowell. I'll still read more by her and just hope for better.
Audio Book: Meh. I think this was somewhat part of the problem. The reader's voice bored me most of the time. I listened to Fangirl and loved it so much I automatically went out and bought the book. I might even try reading Landline in a year and see if I like it more.
